- Dana's blog updated, talking about a strange problem she's having with her website, www.ilovebees.com. Links to the pages as they appeared on July 13 (prior to any updates) are on archived pages.

- Dana's blog updated. She says she wants to fix her website before she flies to China on July 29th.

- The two Rabbit Holes:
- vpisteve receives a mysterious honey bear via Federal Express. Cut-out letters inside the honey anagram to spell "ilovebees."
- Moviegoers watching a trailer for the upcoming release of the Halo 2 (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/halo2/) game for Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com)'s Xbox gaming console (http://www.xbox.com) see the words "www.xbox.com" momentarily morph into "www.ilovebees.com accompanied by the sound of loudly buzzing bees."
- www.ilovebees.com is a web site for "Margaret's Honey" in Napa Valley, California, but the site looks as if it has been hacked.
- A link leads to Dana's blog (http://ilovebees.blogspot.com/), where she has posted uncorrupted versions of the site's five main pages.

- Hacked changes to the site appear as follows:
- A black box with white text appears on the main page, indicating that the System Peril Distributed Reflex is in control. - Other text on the site includes quotes from various literary works, disjointed pieces of an interior monologue from someone called The Operator, and what looks like some sort of computer commands.
- The site's graphic files appear corrupted. Investigation reveals that, when opened in Notepad or a similar text-editing tool, they contain snippets of plain text. When arranged properly, they reveal The Widow's Journey story.

- Some people receive a strange, disjointed e-mail from ladybee7@hotmail.com (mailto:ladybee777@hotmail.com), which is determined to be made up entirely of snippets of text from other e-mails sent to that address.

- Dana's blog updated talking about the "hack" into the ilovebees.com website. She also mentions that e-mail to ladybee777@hotmail.com (mailto:ladybee777@hotmail.com) is disappearing.

- Dana's blog updated with a message saying she's "done." She heads out to China.
- Dana's voicemail is updated, reflecting her departure from the country.
- Phase 1 complete:
- The "network throttling" countdown on the ilovebees.com (http://www.ilovebees.com) main page expires.
- The old versions of the site's pages are stored as "quarantined" pages of "fragmented memory."
- The MAYDAY text is replaced with another Operator's Monologue.
- A picture of Dana, labeled killer.jpg, appears on the site. More can be found on the site's 404 error page (http://www.ilovebees.com/404.html). These images, too, are corrupted. Hidden inside them are questions, apparently from e-mails that we have sent to ladybee777@hotmail.com (mailto:ladybee777@hotmail.com), and answers from an unknown source, later learned to be The Sleeping Princess.
