The SPARTAN program is a military project to create enhanced humans for combat. Little is known of the original SPARTAN program. The first Spartans, including James James, Gladys, Gilly, and Morales, were volunteers who were put through incredibly difficult training. They call themselves Spartans 1.0.

The children of Spartans like Jan and Kevin are called Spartans 1.1.

The next generation Spartans were kidnapped. The SPARTAN-IIs are legendary in the war against the Covenant. Directed by Dr. Halsey they were taken from their parents at an early age (and replaced by flash clones (http://library.psyjnir.net/?id=184) so they would not be noticed) and subjected to harsh modifications. These modifications made them superhuman but at grave cost and risk. James James killed someone who was trying to kidnap Jan for the project. Jersey thinks that Yasmine was kidnapped for the Spartan program, and when she died, her brain was used as the basis for Durga.

The SPARTAN-IIs were once thought lost at the Battle of Reach, with the only survivor being Master Chief John-117. John-117 left on the Pillar of Autumn (http://library.psyjnir.net/?id=150) and fought the Covenant, the Flood, and the ancient AI construct 343 Guilty Spark on the ring world of Halo. Several of the SPARTAN-IIs had survived however, and fought alongside the Master Chief during the events of First Strike (http://library.psyjnir.net/?id=244).
