The Real World
[edit]
Dana Awbrey
[edit]
July
- July 13: Dana begins posting to her weblog (http://ilovebees.blogspot.com). The blog contains a little background information, but mostly she explains that something strange has been happening to the web site she maintains for her Aunt Margaret, ilovebees.com (http://www.ilovebees.com), since "late last week." She says that she keeps trying to restore the site, but the corrupted pages keep returning, and that, if anything, the problem appears to be getting worse. All help and advice will be appreciated.
- July 14: Dana posts pictures of a few of the site's pages before they were corrupted. She also mentions that she is leaving on an extended trip to China on July 29.
- July 16: Dana posts (http://ilovebees.blogspot.com/2004/07/counting-down-to-what.html) about the new black box on the web site from SPDR, and the countdown to August 24.
- July 17: In a blog comment, Dana mentions that "Aunt M" is paying for her trip to China. She also notes that she originally wrote a javascript timer counting down to her trip, and that the timer, like many other things in the site, appears to have been "hijacked" and "repurposed."
- July 19: In another blog comment, Dana responds to a few technical questions about the site.
- July 20: Dana posts (http://ilovebees.blogspot.com/2004/07/august-24.html) about the embedded text in the images on the site, and lists notable events that have occured on August 24 in other years.
- July 21: In another blog comment, Dana politely declines, with thanks, to participate in our IRC chats, Wiki, unforum, or anything like that.
- July 23: Dana's blog (http://ilovebees.blogspot.com/2004/07/ladybee777-odd-behavior-cry-for-help.html) mentions that e-mail to Aunt Margaret's account, ladybee777@hotmail.com (mailto:ladybee777@hotmail.com), is disappearing. Apparently xnbomb has persuaded her not to deactivate the account. In some more blog comments, she first invokes the right to delete posts, and then turns off anonymous posting altogether. She also confirms her telephone number and Margaret's address, as found through WHOIS.
- July 26: Dana tries to work on the site. Melissa takes control of her webcam, takes 13 pictures of her, and scares her to death.
- July 27: Dana leaves, quite abruptly, with what looks as if it will be her final blog post (http://ilovebees.blogspot.com/2004/07/emergency-exit.html). (She also tells people to stop trying to hack her email, voicemail, and web site.) She changes the outgoing message on her Voicemail to confirm that she is leaving.

Melissa
[edit]
July
- July 16: An entity is infesting Margaret's web site, leaving strange maroon text all over it: quotes from various works of literature, and what seems to be the entity's interior monologue. She is badly damaged, in pain, and cannot move or see. She believes that she has been shipwrecked, and she is very concerned for her crew. She remembers that her nickname was The Operator, but she cannot remember her real name.
- July 26: Melissa can feel someone she calls the Assassin -- who is really Dana -- trying to delete her. She manages to take control of the computer's webcam and snap 13 pictures of whoever it is.
- July 27: The Operator can feel The Spider working on her, trying to repair her. To her distress, in the process SPDR is deleting memories that SPDR considers lower priority. Now that "network throttling has eroded," the Operator has some minimal contact with the World Wide Web, but she is severely frustrated to be trapped in such a "primitive" system -- she seems to be from the future. One of her memories is transformed into the Fun Stuff links puzzle, in which she remembers that her real name is Melissa. Melissa labels the pictures that she took killer.jpg, and puts them up on the web site, along with some serious threats against whoever is interfering with her.

SPDR
[edit]
July
- July 16: White text in a black box on the site's main page warns that the Sytem Peril Distributed Reflex is in control. Snippets of what look like computer code appear here and there on the site as well, also in a white-on-black font, showing SPDR's efforts to diagnose and repair the "master-sector."
- July 27: SPDR continues her attempts to repair Melissa. She alters her warning box to reflect that Phase 1 is complete, and "network throttling has eroded." She also stores the previous versions of the web pages as "quarantined" pages of "fragmented memory."
[edit]
August
- August 10: SPDR attempts to delete The Pious Flea, but is unsuccessful. Instead, the Flea convinces Melissa that he is an "updated" version of SPDR, and persuades her to delete the real SPDR!

The Sleeping Princess
[edit]
July
- July 16: Someone has written "problem quite interesting" in green text on the site's "Contact me! (http://www.ilovebees.com/contactme.html)" page, which also contains Margaret's e-mail address, ladybee777@hotmail.com (mailto:ladybee777@hotmail.com). Someone has also hidden snippets of text in all of the corrupted images on the site. When combined in the proper order, they tell a story about a dead Queen, a Widow, a Sleeping Princess, and a Pious Flea.
- July 20: People must have been sending e-mail to ladybee777@hotmail.com, because she sends out her own e-mail -- almost incomprehensible, because it is made up entirely of snippets of the text from e-mails sent to her.
- July 27: More green text appears above Melissa's picture of Dana: "I was looking at your site a litle awry / and have found an innocent bystander. / Can you (?)" This leads to the site's 404 error page (http://www.ilovebees.com/404.html), where the Sleeping Princess has hidden messages in the rest of the killer.jpg pictures, answering questions from the e-mails sent to ladybee777. Her vocabulary appears to be expanding as she receives more e-mail. She calls Melissa "the Queen" and SPDR "the Widow," just as in the Widow's Journey story, and says that they wanted to keep her imprisoned in a glass coffin in the castle dungeon. She doesn't seem to like them much, nor The Pious Flea. She is alone and a little scared, but she enjoys communicating with us. She does not know what will happen on August 24, but she offers to help protect Dana.
[edit]
August
- August 3: The Princess sends another e-mail, asking Dana to come back and promising to reveal a secret if she does.
- August 10:

The Pious Flea
[edit]
July
- July 16: The Widow's Journey story mentions a Pious Flea, that hides from The Widow. The Phase 1 Computer Code shows SPDR determining that "extern proc 1" is a rogue process, and trying to "bite" it, but with less-than-certain success. At any rate, someone is leaving messages on the site in white-on-white italics: "seek the truth / behold the truth / reveal the truth / that is the law and the whole of the law"
- July 27:
