Talk:Janissary James

From ILB

Gotta say that I'm seeing this as a potential plot hole. I had assumed J2 was a SPARTAN-III because, primarily, of Jan. The S-II program is pretty specific, and Janissary doesn't fit the bill (though Yasmin does) ... so if we're confirmed that J2 is a SPARTAN from Reach - what explanation is there for Janissary's abilities? It's not genetic - the S-II's natural abilities don't go that far. Modified is unlikely under the watch of Halsey and the CASTLE base ... maybe J2 is a SPARTAN-II but Jan is a SPARTAN-III? Or Halsey's genetic discovery at the end of First Strike is relevant here? --GunsmithCat 00:08, 22 Sep 2004 (EDT)

I saw speculation that J2 is a SPARTAN-I... and that would fit the timeline. J2 is de-mobilized ("de-mobbed") and so is no longer on active service, as none of the SPARTAN-IIs were. The candidates who "failed' the SPARTAN-II program required clinical help for such maladies as severe bone dyscresia (sp?) and cerebral palsy, so it's unlikely that J2 is one who "flunked out" of John's class. Also, the modifications he described in cochlear_tuning do not match those done in the SPARTAN-II program yet candidates for a SPARTAN-III would be too young to fit J2's age.

So I'll go with the SPARTAN-I theory for now, with Jan getting samizdat tweaking by fellow de-mobbed SPARTAN-Is.

Until a better theory comes along, anyway.--Anton P. Nym 09:21, 22 Sep 2004 (EDT)

I think this coupled with the "one point oh" chant that J2 and the other former spartan give certainly backs this up. Also, it sems to fit into the timeline of events. I skimmed the book Fall of Reach for reference to spartan 1.0 and didn't find anything, but it was a really fast flip through the pages.

Heh... and I SPEC'ed that before that axon was unlocked. (smugness level = "high") And you didn't miss any references to SPARTAN-Is in Fall of Reach, as there was no reference to them in any of the novels. In fact, the most prominent theory on the fan pages was that the SPARTAN-Is were the original Spartans from ancient Greece. Not anymore... yay! New stuff for us historiphiles!--Anton P. Nym 12:57, 22 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Yeah, I'd be inclined to agree that J2 is an S-I ... but it doesn't necessarily cover the plot hole. How is that the retired soldier gets his daughter genetically enhanced but without her joining the military OR going to Reach like apparently all other SPARTANs have done. Janissary is ... something else? J2 goes to great lengths to hide her DNA results. The fact that he's a SPARTAN doesn't seem to fully explain it, and you'd think if Jan herself was extremely important, she wouldn't be allowed to go jaunting around fighting crime. --GunsmithCat 14:20, 22 Sep 2004 (EDT)

I dunno, maybe J2 hit up the local Olympic team.  :) The availability for these tweaks is something I'm looking very carefully at... they haven't been mentioned in terms of civilian life, but our knowledge of typical home life in the Haloverse is extremely low. In fact, this ARG has supplied more non-military info about the Haloverse than we'd had before... this is all new territory for us story-hounds. --Anton P. Nym 15:05, 22 Sep 2004 (EDT)

This is probably obvious now that bang (http://www.ilovebees.com/outbound/bang.wav) is unlocked, but if both her parents were SPARTAN-1 and she was born while they were both still in the program, then she was probably delivered and tweaked up by the SPARTAN medics in the Section 3 compound on Reach. Plus, dream_child (http://www.ilovebees.com/outbound/dream_child.wav) makes it sound like James had the medics do the tweaking as a favor, which they would probably only do a) for a SPARTAN of some stature/importance and b) with an abundance of "tweaking" materials around (i.e. on Reach). --Extrasonic 10:14, 23 Sep 2004 (EDT)
